  31. To use the Spellswell 7 Demonstration version:

  33. •Double-click the Spellswell 7 Demo icon.
  34.  
  35. •Choose Open from the File menu.
  36.  
  37. •When Spellswell 7 asks you to select and open a document to check, choose the document called “Check This Document”.  Spellswell 7 will read “Check This Document” and show you each mistake or typing error it questions, giving you several options for dealing with each:

  39. •typing a replacement word
  40. •scrolling through the entire dictionary to locate a replacement word
  41. •letting Spellswell 7 guess a replacement word
  42. •skipping to the next error
  43. •adding the questioned word to the dictionary (if you’re sure it’s correct)

  45. NOTE--This demonstration version of Spellswell 7 won’t let you add words to the dictionary.  With the REAL Spellswell 7, you can add words to or delete words from the dictionary.

  47. In addition to simple spelling errors, Spellswell 7 alerts you to typographical errors with punctuation and spacing.  Spellswell 7 also has a “Word Choices” feature that displays proper uses of common homonyms and correct usage of words with similar meanings.

  49. Below, we have listed common typing and spelling errors that Spellswell 7 catches.  Most of these checks are optional.  Spellswell 7 is flexible.  You can customize it to suit your personal needs.

  51. •    Spellswell 7 detects proper nouns that are not capitalized.
  52. •    Spellswell 7 spots uncapitalized words at the beginning of sentences.
  53. •    Spellswell 7 questions incorrectly hyphenated words such as “back-up”. 
  54. •    Spellswell 7 catches missing apostrophes in words like “dont”.
  55. •    Spellswell 7 notices missing spaces between sentences and words.
  56. •    Spellswell 7 finds spaces before punctuation marks.
  57. •    Spellswell 7 uncovers extra spaces between words.
  58. •    Spellswell 7 flags incorrect abbreviations, like “Ph.d.”
  59. •    Spellswell 7 observes double word errors, like “the the”.
  60. •    Spellswell 7 examines usage of “a” and “an” before consonants and/or vowels.
  61. •    Spellswell 7 includes the “Word Choices” option.  Spellswell 7 compares words against the Word Choices list.  When it finds matches it displays spellings of similar words with examples of proper usage of each word.

This Word Choices list includes homonyms, such as “to”, “too”, and “two”, and words with similar meanings, such as “number” and “amount”.  You can add words to and remove words from the Word Choices list.  You might wish to add words to this list to remember how to spell similar sounding names such as Johnson and Johnston.

  65. NOTE--This Spellswell 7 demonstration version will not modify your documents or your dictionary.  The real Spellswell 7 saves corrections in your documents, without affecting document formatting.  It also allows you to add words to or remove words from your dictionary.

  85. This means that Spellswell 7 can work within System 7 applications that use Apple Events Word Services.

The Writeswell Jr. program included in this Spellswell 7 demo folder demonstrates Apple Events Word Services.  Keep Spellswell 7 and Writeswell Jr. in the same folder and a “Check Spelling” menu item appears in your Writeswell Jr. Services menu.  Selecting the Check Spelling menu item opens Spellswell 7.  Then the text of your Writeswell Jr. documents is sent to Spellswell 7 for correction.  Writeswell Jr. and Spellswell 7 work so closely that you cannot tell they are separate applications.

  89. Here’s what to do to see how this works (you must have System 7 to observe this new feature):

  91. •Double-click the Writeswell Jr. application icon to open a blank “New Window”.

  93. •Type several sentences with several incorrectly spelled words.

  95. •Choose Check Spelling from the Services menu.

  97. •Spellswell 7 opens and checks the text of your Writeswell Jr. document.

  99. When checking Word Services documents as a built-in menu item, Spellswell 7 allows up to 3 replacements.  The real Spellswell 7 lets you correct all of your errors.

  102. If Check Spelling does not appear in the Services Menu
  103. 1) Run Spellswell 7.
  104. 2) Use "Get New Service" in the Services menu to add it.

The Word Services Suite is a public, standard protocol, endorsed by Apple and developed by Working Software.  The Word Services Suite defines the standard language that Macintosh applications will use to communicate with one another for functions involving text.  This communication ability allows any Macintosh application to use spelling checkers, envelope addressers, grammar checkers, hyphenators, Greek translators, and other utilities that operate on text as if they are built directly into the application itself.
